Séamus O'Sullivan
Senior Outdoor Access Specialist
Meridian Digital Ltd
"Retirement shouldn't mean the end of exploring Ireland's most beautiful landscapes. It's about finding the right routes, at the right pace, with the right information. That's what I'm here to help with."
Séamus discovered his passion for accessible outdoor experiences while working as a park ranger in Killarney National Park back in 2008. He noticed something important then: older visitors wanted to explore Ireland's trails, but they weren't getting honest, detailed information about what to expect. No guessing. No surprises. Just good guidance.
That gap drove him to study Environmental Science and Outdoor Education at University College Cork. After graduating in 2006, he spent five years managing trail maintenance and visitor accessibility across multiple Irish parks. But his real breakthrough came while working with the Irish Rambling Club — that's where he developed the gradient assessments and terrain classifications now used by hiking websites nationwide.
For over 16 years now, he's been mapping, surveying, and testing walking routes. Hundreds of them. From Killarney's gentle valley paths to the quieter stretches of the Burren Way, from Glendalough's scenic loops to lesser-known routes that deserve more attention. He's talked to retirees about what makes a walk genuinely enjoyable, not just theoretically walkable.
Areas of Focus
What Séamus Specializes In
Killarney National Park Easy Routes
Detailed guides to valley trails, lakeside paths, and forest walks that don't require scrambling or steep climbs. He's walked every major route in Killarney and knows which ones work best for different fitness levels.
Burren Way for Retirees
The Burren Way's stunning limestone landscape doesn't have to mean tough hiking. Séamus has mapped the gentle sections, identified rest spots with views, and created realistic day-walk options that capture the Burren's unique character.
Glendalough Valley Walking Guides
Glendalough's steep mountain trails get all the attention, but the valley walks are where the real magic happens. Séamus focuses on the accessible circuits that showcase the monastic ruins, lake views, and ancient history without the elevation gain.
Senior-Friendly Day Hike Planning
It's not just about picking a trail. It's about understanding pace, breaks, weather considerations, and realistic time estimates. He teaches people how to plan walks that fit their lives, not the other way around.
Trail Accessibility Assessment
Gradient analysis, surface conditions, parking access, facilities, emergency exits — he evaluates the real-world details that determine whether a route actually works for someone. No romanticizing difficult terrain.
Group Walking Program Design
Whether you're organizing walking groups, community outings, or retirement club excursions, Séamus has experience structuring programs that keep people engaged, safe, and coming back for more.
